Here is a nice introduction to the concept which i fully espouse and sadly see lacking in contemporary politics, economics and medicine.
And just as the concept can be applied in product design i believe it can be and should be applied to other spheres of life.
The Value Goodness (Ren) is the core of Confucian thought, in which the conception of moderate desire is a crucial part. Moderate desire means harmony between ritual (Li) and desire, avoiding deficiency of indulgence and mortification.
This concept is found again for example in the Quran (17:29) with a description of moderate behaviour or (2:143) with the words 'wasatan' ( medial).
The essential thought is found in the work of the Greek poet Hesiod (c.700 bc), ‘observe due measure; moderation is best in all things’, and of the Roman comic dramatist Plautus (c.250–184 bc), ‘moderation in all things is the best policy.’
